There are many different applications of planetary gear sets. The most common is the distribution of power between 2 wheels in a car’s drive axle. Four-wheel drives use 2 axle differentials, which are further augmented by a centre differential. Hybrid electric vehicles use summation gearboxes to distribute power from the combustion engine to the wheels and to an electric motor.
